Radiation Hazards, All Around Us

Without us knowing it, our daily lives surrounded by the radiation. Maybe all this time we only know a small device that emits radiation, without knowing what it is radiation, how radiation can be about us and what the impact on health.

Radiation is all kinds of energy are delivered without an intermediary medium. When an energy to reach the target without any intermediate medium, so that energy can be considered as radiation. From this we can conclude that when the radiation spectrum is very broad sense. Energy radiation is generally in the form of waves.

Radiation is divided into 2 large, non-ionizing radiation and ionizing radiation. Generally, people call and recall of radiation as ionizing radiation, eg by X-ray radiation, or a recent trend is due to radiation damage Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan. Indeed, non-ionizing radiation more precisely who is around us, despite a lower energy level.

Ionizing radiation is high energy radiation that can ionize (break down of the ions in) atoms, alpha particles, beta, gamma rays, X rays and neutrons can produce a high enough energy to ionize atoms. Radiation by high-energy neutrons can be spread through the air medium, so that the area affected could be immense. It happens to damage a nuclear reactor at Fukushima nuclear power plant, Japan.
Some types of ionizing radiation,
1. Alpha Particles
2. Beta particles
3. Gamma rays
4. X-ray

Non-ionizing radiation typically has an energy that can only alter the structure of atoms, without ionization. Which includes non-ionizing radiation include ultraviolet spectrum (UV A and UV-B), visible light, infrared rays, microwaves, radio frequency and extremely low frequency.
Several types of non-ionizing radiation,
1. Extremely low frequency
2. Radio frequency and microwave
3. Infrared rays
4. Visible light
5. Ultraviolet light
6. Laser

Radiation effects on health depending on the type of radiation, whether it is non-ionizing radiation or ionizing radiation. In addition to the type of radiation, the wavelength of energy and frequency also affect the level of energy intensity. The higher level of energy intensity, even including non-ionizing radiation, its impact on our bodies will get worse.
